Issues on Social Networking

More and more teenagers devote much of their time online. Actually, according to study, ninety percent of teens are now online. Messages texting, e-mail and MySpace, these are all become part of teens' everyday live. To put it another way, it's part of teen culture.

For many of them, it's a way to escape parents' control. They're able to have a private space even while they'er still at home. Also, since teens are in a age of "identity consolidation", social networking sites provide them a platform to try out different identities. Furthermore, for teens who are being marginalized, for example, gays or lesbians, they actually find communities online.

However, social networking is like a doubleedged sword, in addition to the private space and the sense of freedom and independence that it offer to teens, it also raises many concerns. "Online predators" has become the main concern of many parents and teachers. They worry about the things that their kids put online will eventually be misused by someone with bad intention or their kids will be penalized forever for their mistakes. Of course, these are some things that both parents and teachers should worry about, but according to study, the real concern has to deal with the trouble that kids might into their own. For instance, for kids who are engaging in pathological behaviors, such as kids with eating disorder, social networking accelerate their problems by providing them a platform to exchange tips and encourage each other.
These concerns raise the issue of parental control. By saying parental control, it doesn't mean that parents should limit their access to these social networking, instead, it's the job for parents to teach their kids how to use it responsibly and safely.

  1. Hey This is tyler shillingford fro mthe understand personal computers lecture class. I loved the points you made about social networking having both a negative stance as well as a positive stance. However what did u mean by soical networking being a double edged sword ? I was picturing the double egded sword but just couldnt't figure out the meaning behind your way of thinking. I was also interested in the part where you mentioned how paretns should get more involved in their teen online adventures because if they don't predators and child molestors will indirectly attack the individuals. One thing i would like to get feedback on you from is the topic of peer pressure in social networking and how online peer pressure could lead to death and other cruel actions .Overall i loved your thoughts on the topic of social networking and hope to see more blogs from you soon ..

    ..ty..

  2. Hey this is Luisa Rodriguez from CSCI 012 class and I must say I really liked many of the points you made in this blog. I really agree with the fact that you feel that parents should educate their children on how to use online services properly. I feel that is something so important because it allows the parent and the child to have a better sense of communication and understanding. Instead of trying to limit their use of these serivices, they can at least make sure their children are utilizing the services in the right and safe manner. I really liked the way you set up this blog as well, it was very well done and organized. Nice job!

  3. It does seem as Social Networking is a double-edged sword, but whose blade will be the one striking? Anyhow, meeting people over the internet is one of the riskiest things where internet predators would have a serious advantage, where they can lie all about themselves while they know everything about you. It's a trap set just for kids and teenagers that don't know any better but to trust those they meet online. Either way, the internet has both it's upsides and it's downside. It was originally meant for good, but... Well, that all changed over the years...

  4. Wow, I really enjoyed reading the comments that you put up on our blog. You pesented many useful aspects of online networking that people overlook or never even think about. I do agree with your statement that for those individuals who are outcast from society for their disabilities or sexual orientation,do find a sanctuary online for people they can relate to in significant ways. I do feel that online networks are a positive reinforcement in their lives in this manner. I like how you brought up the idea of the online predator. I do believe that parents should not prevent their children from using online networks, because we all know that if they really wanted to they could have access to the internet elsewhere. In agreement with your statement, they should instead teach their children how to be reponsible and use the computer in a mature manner.

  5. I like the comment on parental control. Parents have many tools which they can use to limit their children from using the internet. They can control the amount of time the child spends on the internet each day, the sites which they can visit, etc. However, the child can just go to a library to use the computer or a friend's computer. So the parents should be teaching the child to use the computer more responsibly instead of just limiting their access.

  7. I agree with you wholeheartedly. You articulated exactly what the video was trying to express. I could not have summarized it better myself. I especially agree with the aspect of social networking being a double-edged sword. Few people realize the implications of the internet and the damage it can cause.

  8. The importance of social networking sites in today's world is immense. Indeed, the above mentioned websites are best, however there is also a latest Social Networking site MyworldGo , where you can connect with others. We are also available on iOS and android.
